Hey fellas. Just got mine back from dealer last week for same issue. My rig made the whining noise while accelerating and decelerating. I had leak on transfer case seal and needed to get ring/pinion ( gears, fluid, everything in diff ) replaced for 2nd time. Been driving her hard all weekend with no noise.

Here's a picture of the transfer assembly case fill bolt, looking aft from underneath the engine. The exhaust flex joint that leads to the catalytic converter is on the left. The drain bolt is in the bottom of the transfer case, hidden from view in this photo. It looks identical. The picture attached to the above post is much clearer.

The bearing wears into the shaft and/or thrust washer which increases mainshaft endplay. When this happens, the transfer case input ball bearing is also supporting the transmission mainshaft which it can’t do for long without failing itself. At that point, anything can happen and it won’t be cheap to fix.

Now I can't get it to shift back to 2H! Could this be from having fluid leak out of the T-case after I pulled the drive shaft out or what? I'm hoping to get back on the road ASAP!

Dec 05, 2006 · My buddies shop said that some year Dana 20's used tranny fluid instead of gear fluid for lubrication. I never heard of this as well and not quite sure I believe it either. The transfer case has the Tera Low 3.15:1 low range kit it in if it makes any difference.

I just drove the truck for the first time in a few weeks. I had to re-tap the drain plug since the old one was stripped and leaking fluid (my problem). There is a whine/squeel coming from the transfer case every once in a while. I don't know if it still lubing up some of the bearings and gears, or if some of the bearings are shot.
